FMGE Examination

EXAMINATION

Foreign Medical Graduate Examination

The FMGE, or Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is a licensure test conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India. It is mandatory for Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) who have obtained their medical degrees from foreign institutions and wish to practice medicine in India. This exam ensures that returning graduates meet the minimum standards required for safe and effective medical practice within the country.

Exam Format

FMGE is a computer-based test held twice a year—June and December. It comprises a single day with two sessions (Part A and Part B), each with 150 multiple-choice questions. The test is objective in nature with no negative marking. The total duration of the exam is 5 hours, with a break between the two parts.

  • Total Questions: 300 MCQs
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes for each part
  • Mode: Online (Computer-based)
  • Passing Criteria: 150 out of 300 marks (50%)

To be eligible for FMGE, candidates must be Indian citizens or OCIs with a primary medical qualification from a recognized medical university abroad. The qualification should be confirmed by the Indian Embassy of the respective country and must be listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools. Result Declaration

The results of the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) are generally declared within 4 to 6 weeks following the examination date. The National Board of Examinations (NBE), which conducts the FMGE, releases the results exclusively on its official website. Candidates are required to log in using their application ID and password to access their results. The scorecard contains detailed marks, including the total score, sectional performance, and pass/fail status. To successfully clear the FMGE, a candidate must secure a minimum of 150 marks out of 300. This result plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for medical practice in India, as passing the FMGE is mandatory for all foreign medical graduates seeking Indian licensure. Once declared, the results are final, and individual scorecards can be downloaded for future use during the licensing process.

Result Review

While the NBE maintains high transparency in conducting and evaluating the FMGE, students who believe there has been an error in their score may initiate a formal review request. However, it is important to note that the NBE does not permit a physical rechecking or re-evaluation of answer sheets due to confidentiality and standardized processing protocols. Candidates can raise grievances only in the event of technical discrepancies, such as mismatched scores or issues in downloading the result. These grievances can be submitted through the official NBE grievance redressal portal within the stipulated time frame. All requests are evaluated, and if any genuine error is found in result processing, necessary corrections are made. Still, the policy does not allow for score enhancement or post-result corrections without valid reason. Therefore, candidates are advised to double-check all credentials and maintain communication with the NBE portal for result updates and clarification procedures.

After the Exam – What’s Next?

Clearing the FMGE marks the beginning of a crucial phase in a medical graduate’s career in India. Upon receiving a passing score, candidates are required to undergo a one-year compulsory rotatory internship at an NMC-recognized hospital or medical college in India. This internship is vital for gaining hands-on clinical experience and exposure to the Indian healthcare system. After successfully completing the internship, the candidate is eligible to apply for permanent registration either through the State Medical Council (SMC) or directly with the National Medical Commission (NMC), depending on their preference and region of practice. Once registered, they are legally allowed to practice as a licensed medical doctor in India. Many candidates also choose to specialize or prepare for postgraduate entrance examinations (like NEET-PG) following their registration to further advance their careers in India’s medical sector.

Abroad Medical Registration

While FMGE certification is mandatory for practicing medicine within India, it is not recognized as a valid licensing document for practicing in foreign countries. For candidates who aspire to practice medicine internationally, clearing the FMGE is only one part of their journey. They must also meet the specific licensing and qualification criteria of their desired country of practice. For example, candidates planning to practice in the United States must qualify the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination); those targeting the UK must pass the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) test; and for Australia, the AMC (Australian Medical Council) exams are required. Although FMGE confirms a graduate’s competence to practice in India, international medical registration requires country-specific exams, language proficiency tests, and credential evaluations. Thus, candidates must carefully plan their next steps based on their global career aspirations and prepare accordingly for any additional examinations and documentation required.
