EXAMINATION
The AMC Exam is divided into two parts:
AMC CAT MCQ (Computer Adaptive Test):
This is the first step and consists of a 3.5-hour multiple-choice test with 150 questions. The test is adaptive in nature, meaning the difficulty level adjusts based on the candidate’s performance. It covers topics across all major clinical disciplines including medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics, and general practice. The test is designed to assess applied clinical knowledge.
AMC Clinical Examination:
Once candidates pass the MCQ, they become eligible for the Clinical Examination. This is an OSCE-style test involving 16 stations, each assessing a specific clinical skill such as diagnosis, communication, examination, and patient management. The candidate must perform well in a minimum of 12 stations to pass.
To be eligible for the AMC examination process, candidates must hold a primary medical qualification awarded by a university recognized by the Australian Medical Council or listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Indian medical graduates who hold an MBBS degree from a recognized institution can apply, provided their university is accredited. Additionally, candidates must obtain verification of their credentials through EPIC (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates International Credentials Services). This verification is mandatory and must be completed before applying for the exam.
Candidates need to submit the following verified documents:
Document verification through EPIC is a key step and should be initiated early as the process can take several weeks. All documents must be submitted digitally through the AMC account.
General Medicine | Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Nephrology |
Surgery | General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Trauma, Pre- and Post-operative Care |
Obstetrics & Gynecology | Antenatal Care, Labour Management, Postpartum Issues, Menstrual Disorders, Contraception |
Pediatrics | Neonatology, Pediatric Growth, Development, Common Pediatric Illnesses |

Begin by creating an account on the EPIC website and submitting medical credentials for verification.
Register on the AMC website and receive an AMC Candidate Number.
Once verification is complete, log in to your AMC portal and book the MCQ exam.
Results are published online within four weeks.
If MCQ is passed, apply for the Clinical Exam through the AMC portal.
Attend the scheduled exam, usually conducted in Australia.
Upon successful completion, receive the AMC Certificate, which is necessary for further registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
For the AMC MCQ, results are typically declared within 4 weeks after the test date. The results are made available through the AMC candidate portal, and candidates are informed via email. The result report includes a score and a pass/fail status, though exact scores are not always disclosed.
For the Clinical Examination, results are released within 4–6 weeks after the exam. Candidates receive a detailed report outlining performance across all stations, and only those who pass 12 or more stations are awarded the AMC Certificate. If a candidate believes there has been a mistake or unfairness in the assessment, they may submit a formal request for review. However, the AMC does not allow physical rechecking of answer sheets or recordings. Instead, reviews focus on procedural errors or discrepancies. The review process is clearly outlined on the AMC website and must be submitted within a specific time frame after results are published.

After passing both parts of the AMC Exam, candidates receive an AMC Certificate, making them eligible to apply for General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Most candidates begin their internship or supervised practice year, which is a requirement before obtaining full registration.
Many candidates also pursue employment in hospitals under the Standard Pathway, allowing them to gain local clinical experience, which significantly enhances career prospects in Australia.
Once candidates pass the AMC exams and complete their internship or supervised practice, they can register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
However, if the candidate chooses to return to India or move to another country, they will need to appear for licensing exams applicable in that country (e.g., FMGE for India, USMLE for USA, PLAB for UK). The AMC Certificate itself is not recognized globally but is valid within Australia for medical registration and practice.
